Although these medications are available over the counter, their use can cause pain and disrupt the body’s natural functioning. These include:

Lithium: Commonly used to treat bipolar disorderChemotherapy drugs: especially interferons, pamidronate, cisplatin, carboplatin, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, quinine, mitomycin C, and bevacizumab, which can cause serious kidney damage.

Propylthiouracil, pills for the treatment of thyroid problems.

Pills used to relieve heartburn: omeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole, and esomeprazole.

Antiviral drugs such as acyclovir, which works against herpes, and indinavir and tefonovir, used to treat HIV.

Captopril, used for high blood pressure.

Bone and joint drugs: infliximab, which treats arthritis, and chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, which treat malaria and systemic lupus erythematosus.
