It’s a very handy mnemonic acronym for remembering the order in which to solve a mathematical expression:

Rackets ( in brackets )
Exponents
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction
In French, we often simply refer to it as the order of operations rule :

You always start with parentheses , then exponents (powers), then division and multiplication , from left to right , and finally addition and subtraction , always from left to right .
